Six months ago today, the kids and I moved out from our flat in Málaga, the place we'd called home for several months. Our landlord was incredible, and we exchanged kind words, where he told me I will always have a home there if we come back.

And if I'm honest, I've been struggling a lot.

I haven't picked up my actual camera since July. It sits by my bed, only touched so I can ensure dust doesn't collect.

I love my students and enjoy teaching, but I struggle to focus, to feel connected, I miss the community I thought I had before I left for Spain, and I'm missing the community I made while in Spain.

Transitioning back to San Diego life was harder than I expected. There are so many things people share before you leave for an adventure like this, but so many they don't, or can't, because it's part of the discovery.

Anyway, I wrote a letter to myself as the woman I was last year because a year ago I was gearing up for our departure. I'd really love for you to read it.

My voids ❤️

My sweet girl in the back is my Amora, and is 18 years old. I've had her since she was about 5 weeks old (her mom cat died and I took her in to bottle feed her.) The two in the front are 5 months old sisters, Darwin and Gumball. My kids named them after The Amazing World of Gumball.

Today, as Donald Trump is about to sign into effect his "One Big Beautiful Bill ACT," 249 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, I return to Paulo Freire.

Since its signing, and of course before, this country has experienced growth and caused harm. It has long built itself through systems of oppression, through camps, occupation, imprisonment, and colonization while growing economically, building programs, and creating global connections. And we had only begun to start trying to reconcile and admit, but have not disguised as “American exceptionalism.”

So as this OBBBA is signed, and the rich will celebrate their wins, millions will lose their healthcare.

The rich will get richer in an era of mounting economic disparities.

Citizens and non-citizens alike are being kidnapped in broad daylight, now backed by even more funding through this bill.

Protections for transgender loved ones have been stripped from policy prior to this. Environmental protections and their needs have been denied. Science is under attack.

Today is supposed to mark freedom. Of course, not for everyone. It was freedom from monarch rule, a declaration of separation from tyranny. But what good is freedom when it is weaponized to justify injustice? Of course, it really is not freedom at all.

I return to Freire’s words in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This quote captures what we are witnessing today in our homes, among neighbors, and in our communities. We have a choice to stand in solidarity. Yet, many are afraid of true liberation and instead, rally behind the oppressors.

So while fireworks erupt and flags are waved, I, with many, sit with the reminder that we are watching authoritarian and oligarchic power take place right in front of us and we can't back down. I am reminded of another of Freire's quotes, where he writes, "The greatest humanistic and historical task of the oppressed: to liberate themselves."

This means we keep fighting and maintaining hope, as the oppressors will not liberate us.

I’ve always felt like I haven’t really belonged. I remember sitting on the bus during field trips, looking at all the friends and groups and wondering why I didn’t have a designated friend group.

I would drive through San Diego or Los Angeles, feeling restless, understanding exactly where to go, how to get from point A to point G, but never feeling really like it was “home,” but knowing that I at least knew the city.

I’ve gotten close to feeling like “home,” or a sense of belonging, but never really quite there.

Until I went to Spain. I can’t quite explain the magic I felt, and sure, there may have been an element of, “It’s new! And amazing! And away!” But I was terrified at first, something I vulnerably share in this blog post.

Anyway, I’d love for you to read a little about my experiences in Spain. This is just one reflection and I’m sure I’ll share more, but now that I have been back in the United States for ten days, I wanted to share some thoughts and experiences I had, and really emphasize why the Fulbright is so important.

It’s much more than an academic award or grant, but it’s an opportunity, a way of connecting individuals across the globe, and an opportunity for many to find feelings of belonging elsewhere.

It is, unfortunately, under attack as we know. Many professionals and academics resigned because they realized the integrity of the program was at risk. No, not because of their own doing, but because of the administration. Because of those who have little to no knowledge of how cultural divides can be bridged, and instead have exerted power and control over beautiful and amazing opportunities such as these.

So please, I urge you to read this, and know that my story is not the only one, there are countless other stories, similar and different, that highlight the importance of programs such as these and the beauty of working abroad.

Dublin absolutely captured my heart in multiple ways.

I had conversations with people about histories of colonization, whether it be in Ireland, the U.S. or elsewhere. We discussed the horrible conditions we are witnessing in the U.S. We talked about the ways things can be better, the importance of connection and culture, and so much more.

My children and I visited the National Leprechaun Museum, where we learned about folklore and mythology in Ireland. We also went to EPIC, the Emigration Museum, which highlights stories of joy, pain, anguish, and reason for emigration.

The landscape and scenery is gorgeous and breathtaking.

We have since arrived back in the U.S., spending time in the Midwest as we do every summer before making our way back to San Diego. I'll be reflecting on the entire journey I've just experienced soon.

As we are about to embark on our journey back to the United States since my Fulbright grant and research has ended, we have been visiting the places that have helped make Málaga feel like home.

Next door to our flat were two places we visited often, one being a restaurant, within a minute walk. We would pass by and see people sitting outside who became familiar faces. We ate here within the first week because we knew there would be food similar to what we were used to because of its American theme.

It was humorous to us because of how much it truly embodied American decor, but the culture was so different from the states. It was welcoming, familiar and laid back, yet provided excellent service and food. And when we found U.S. baseball teams on their menu, including San Diego and LA Dodgers burgers, well, it was a fit lol.

We became regulars, to the point they knew our drink and food order, and would let us know when they were out of our favorite items. It was such a great environment that we even brought family there when they were in town, too.

Part of our experience in Spain was just that: the beauty of community and connection, even if you weren't necessarily friends, stands out. When I received my grant, I expected a professional transformation of course, but the personal was just as significant, if not more. And @grupo_kaiser helped make our neighborhood feel like home.

I ordered the San Diego Padres burger, because you know, that's where we'll eventually end up again, so I felt it was fitting. :)

These experiences are not just for the professional, but the community we become, we fit into, the connections we make, and the values we bring back with us to help make our own spaces stronger and more supportive, hopefully. And special thanks to Kaiser, for providing excellent service and a welcoming environment.

When we first moved to Málaga we discovered a lovely place: Paws for a Moment Cat Café and Co-Working.

We knew Málaga was temporary since I'd received a Fulbright grant, but we really missed our furbabies in San Diego, who are being loved and well cared for while we are gone, but we miss them nonetheless.

Stumbling into Paws, we knew this would be a comfy place to help Málaga feel more like home. We didn't know what the transition to Málaga would be like, but finding places like Paws was amazing and so needed.

As the grant has come to an end and we need to return back to the United States, we visited one more time today to say bye to our kitty friends. We've visited so often I think they started recognizing us, and we certainly know them each by name.

It's bittersweet to leave, returning back to our loved ones, but we cannot thank @pawsmalaga enough for having this space where we laughed, snuggled with kitties, painted mugs in, and where we shared a cold beverage with each other. We'll forever be grateful for this amazing place and if and when we return to Málaga some day, hope to see the kitties again then.

My time as a research scholar in Málaga, Spain is sadly coming to an end.

It's bittersweet; I'm looking forward to returning to San Diego and reconnecting with places and faces I love. I'm eager to begin connecting with the writing community there. I'm excited to see my students.

I'm saddened to leave a beautiful city with amazing people who value life, love, and connection. I've developed a similar appreciation. I'm heartbroken to leave a community I have bonded with, neighbors who greet me with a hearty, "¡Buenas!" And a restaurant with folks next door to our flat who knows our order and asks about how we are with genuine curiosity and care.

I didn't think I'd fall in love with a city like I have Málaga. I knew I'd enjoy living abroad, but I genuinely did not know the deep level of connection I would develop. I also would not have believed you if you told nine year old me this would be my life in my twenties, sharing the experience with my babies. I wouldn't have believed you if you would have told twenty-twobyear old me either as a first-gen student, postponing dreams and goals, that this is where I'd end up, even if for a small, yet beautiful moment in my life.

We leave way too soon, and if we could stay longer, we would.

So, today I got a tattoo to remind me of the beauty and wonder Málaga, Spain has offered me and my children. This is more than a tattoo, but art, representing that of heart, joy, passion, leaps, and life for me.

The origins of Mother's Day can be traced to several sources, especially globally, but for the U.S. we can see it primarily to Anna Jarvis, the official major player due to her advocacy for it becoming a major holiday, and then later attempting to change it due to its commercialization, but others have honored mothers around the world in different ways and with various philosophical underpinnings.

For me, today it's to honor those before us, who have mothered us in whatever form or way.

I'm fortunate to have two incredible children who make me a mom, and I have a great mom myself. Today, I honor them by continuing to do my work, to be firm, direct, assertive, gentle, and with the goal of collectivity and solidarity in my work.

With that, I also want to share a poem I wrote several years ago about Mother's Day, not with the goal of sadness, but to remind us to stand in that solidarity with each other, honoring the work those before us have done, what we do, and after us will do: https://lnkd.in/g3PWyE9H - you can also find the link in my bio.

For me, today it's to honor those before us, who have mothered us in whatever form or way.

I'm fortunate to have two incredible children who make me a mom, and I have a great mom myself. Today, I honor them by continuing to do my work, to be firm, direct, assertive, gentle, and with the goal of collectivity and solidarity in my work.

If you're headed to Sevilla, Spain definitely check out Plaza de España. It's absolutely beautiful, surrounded by parks and a wonderful space to wander, sit, and relax. During our day trip, we saw a live flamenco show along with other music performances.

Bonus points for Star Wars fans: You might recognize here from when Padmé and Anakin are walking through Theed Palace on Naboo.

It was a fun experience overall, beautiful sites, and a great day trip from Málaga.

My best friend came to visit me all the way in Spain.

There are days I think I regret my PhD because of the time it took from me, the debt I’m in, and how hard it’s been to find a job.

Those days aren’t constant or always, but they do happen.

Then I’m reminded of how many incredible people I’ve met, experiences I’ve had, and new ways of thinking I have developed.

If it wasn’t for my PhD, I wouldn’t be in Spain on a Fulbright conducting research and pivoting my interests to something that is fascinating and brings me some joy.

And, if it wasn’t for my PhD, I wouldn’t have met this friend, Dr. Shine Kim, who I spent time with in Spain making memories, be it museums, day trips, hanging out with cute cats, or staying up late into the night talking. We’ve been there for each other through many different stages of our lives, loss, celebration, joy, anguish, and more.

Monday, April 28, when Spain and Portugal completely lost power and communications, a pretty interesting and scary event, we sat there and laughed in the dark because of the sentiment that, “God knew my bestie and I would be too powerful to be in the same city.” 😅

So, not only have we gone through these stages, but we have also experienced a history-making multi-national event. There are few people I’d be willing or hopeful to go through that with, and Shine is undoubtedly one of them.

Science is under attack. And it's not just our scientific approaches, but the information out there.

Let me be clear: science is not a matter of viewpoint diversity. Yes, biases exist. As a researcher, I'll be the first to admit that. However, there is a reason that there are strict peer review processes in place.

They want us illiterate. This includes literacies of media, science, foundational reading, and more.

This will only cause significant harm to us as humans, a society, and the field of science as a whole.

I've shared before how much I love flamenco and the deep historical cultural resistance it holds for the Spanish Roma/Gitano people.

My mom is in town so we took her to a show.

One thing that I've appreciated so much while living here in Spain is a culture of pleasure, joy, and leisure. Of course, people have their struggles, but I've really slowed down myself, soaked in the beauty, and have really leaned into this life.

What I've noticed in all the shows I've attended so far is the deep passion, the smiles, the connections - something that art allows us to delve into. I'm sure as I'm exploring my own joy, my own creative endeavors, this resonates with me, but flamenco in and of itself also just holds a deeply special place in my heart.

I always think about the messages these are sending, the differences in interpretation based on background, geographic origin, generation, and language.

But, I also think about the messages street art and graffiti sends about shared spaces, reclaiming place, connection, and collectivity, as well as resistance and voice.

When I first looked at the flat where we're currently living in Málaga, my kids and I walked around the neighborhood and across from where we initially stood were the words, "Bad Wolf" spray painted on a wall.

This may seem insignificant to most, but to me, it almost felt like a "sign." As a huge Doctor Who fan, the words glared at me, almost pulling me in, embracing me.

You see, one thing I've really been missing is joyful writing, words that tell stories, connect people to each other, the land, the world. I value research, but creating worlds and characters fill my heart and fulfill me. I wrote about this in my blog post, too: https://www.perpetual-wanderlust.com/post/what-we-should-do

So, Bad Wolf says, "I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words. I scatter them, in time and space."

We ended up getting the flat and have been so fortunate to be here. I sit and think about this wonderful experience I have had, with two months remaining, heartbroken it's only that long but incredibly grateful for the time. Meanwhile, I am reminded I need to continue writing, sharing my words "... in time and space."

I know I need to keep writing, depicting stories and emotions of adventure, love, imagination, and the possibilities of what could be. And whether Bad Wolf, or the other moments, are merely coincidental or actually are signs, I, and we, may never know, but I can at least remember that I, in the words of Bad Wolf, "...create myself..."

Visited the Fundación Cueva de Nerja. What a cool place.

The caves were occupied as far back as 35,000 years ago up until about 3,600 years ago, although they did find cave paintings that may be from even further, as far back as 42,000 years ago. And despite this major historical space, it wasn't discovered in modern times until 1959, when 5 teenagers stumbled across it. Historically, it was used as a place of residence as well as burial spaces.

After exploring, we enjoyed a beautiful view while eating some food at the restaurant there. Well worth a visit.

On my journey, I have found myself completely enamored of flamenco and I'd love to share, and for you to read, my latest blog post about it (link in comments and my bio.)

I am in Málaga, and flamenco originates in the Andalucía region, where Málaga is situated. As I have spent time here for almost nine weeks, I am finding myself learning so much about lesser-told histories, lesser-known facts, and important stories about Málaga, the region, and Spain as a whole.

As I have been reflecting on this journey, I find myself really understanding the importance of cultural exchange programs, especially with the furloughs, cancellations, and pauses, I really wanted to share a bit about why I find that they are so important and why I would encourage individuals to engage in them and just as important, advocate for them.

When I was in my 20s, I wanted to do this, but I was scared, honestly. Many other outside factors prevented me from doing so or made the possibility feel harder—money, kids, work, life—but I can't pretend that part of it wasn't because I was scared. Despite that delay, I am so glad I am now engaging in this project.

One of the things I've fallen in love with here in Spain is flamenco. The reality is if you’re visiting southern Spain, you can probably find a flamenco show pretty easily. This is the second one I have attended since living here during my time abrGitanosd both were so different yet just as powerful and moving. In tonight’s show, one of the dancers, Sergio, explained that they are often different day-to-day because of what’s in their hearts.

The origins of flamenco start in southern Spain, specifically in the Andalucía region. But it hasn’t always been a sought after performance, as it has had many, many critics, including Spanish elites, the Catholic Church, and “intellectuals,” as it was associated with “low culture.” But, why? Well, because much of the music was associated with the Roma people, Gitanos, and many refer to themselves as here. Additionally, some elements can also be traced to Moorish traditions as well.

it’s really important to see the ways that flamenco is a form of cultural resistance against the status quo, a way for oral histories to be maintained, performance to represent resiliences and survival, and not just survival, but beauty, too. So while it may be a popular attendance for folks outside of Spain, we cannot dismiss the roots and history of the art form, one that speaks of joy, pain, anguish, beauty, survival, love, connection, community, and culture.

And that is absolutely why I have been so enamored with watching these performances here while in Málaga. I strongly suggest anybody who can attend a performance do so, especially if they find themselves in Spain. And not for the travel aspect, but because of the passion and heart that you can see and feel in each performance.

it’s really important to see the ways that flamenco is a form of cultural resistance against the status quo, a way for oral histories to be maintained, performance to represent resiliences and survival, and not just survival, but beauty, too. So while it may be a popular attendance for folks outside of Spain, we cannot dismiss the roots and history of the art form, one that speaks of joy, pain, anguish, beauty, survival, love, connection, community, and culture.

And that is absolutely why I have been so enamored with watching these performances here while in Málaga. I strongly suggest anybody who can attend a performance do so, especially if they find themselves in Spain. And not for the travel aspect, but because of the passion and heart that you can see and feel in each performance.

The two dancers are Anabel Moreno and Sergio Aranda.

As a visual researcher, I can't help but analyze the various ways to look at this painting and imagine what is happening.

I really loved this painting. The museum is a collection of art that has to do with southern Spain, including Málaga, and all of it is gorgeous and captures so much history of the area. But this one I found this one fascinating for a variety of reasons.

This painting is En El Estudio, by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, and the model in the painting is Aline Masson. It was painted in 1883.

But without further context and story here, what do you imagine happening? What stands out to you? What type of historical and theoretical elements can we think through here, while also staying aware of our own experiences and perspectives that may influence the analysis?

While exploring the Alcazaba Málaga, my kids and I stumbled upon a small colony of cats, each with a clipped ear (a widely understood sign of being spayed or neutered.) It was clear these cats were cared for to some extent, having a food and water station nearby. Like the U.S., there are a lot of smaller groups who take on the responsibility to help take care of them, have them spayed or neutered, and reduce the increase in numbers. This is something we see and are concerned about in the United States, too, and small groups also make similar efforts.

In Spain, laws protect these community cats, making it illegal to tamper with their food and water stations or cause them harm, resulting in significant fines if done and caught. This isn’t perfect, of course, but the intention is to help reduce harm to them and minimize infection and illness among the cats. People are concerned about the increasing numbers of stray cats and the spread of disease, but thanks to some community advocates, they’ve been helping to curb both.

This policy highlights three major things for me: 1) cultural values can and do impact how we engage within our communities and environments, 2) animals are important, and we should not allow harm to them, ensuring care for these living creatures, and, an incredibly important one 3) policy is vital and important, and if we, as a society, as countries, really wanted to, we could implement policies to put safeguards in place for all, including humans, if we truly valued people over profits and gain. We could if we wanted to.

This can also serve as a reminder that our collective efforts can drive change, fostering a more compassionate society and pushing us to exist in solidarity, difficult to do in a capitalistic economic structure, unfortunately.

The opening parade for Carnaval de Málaga was amazing!

The week-long celebration, is set up to say goodbye to winter and welcome Lent with parades, music, and fun events. From minions grooving to "Gasolina" to "The Mask" characters showing off their moves, the festivities were really enjoyable.

We went to the opening parade on Sunday, the start of Carnaval. The joy and celebration of Carnaval de Málaga is something I believe everybody should experience once if they can, or at least Carnaval en España. We've been really trying to truly experience life here while we live here, and this was definitely one way to do it and was well worth it. @carnavalmlg really is amazing!

It's easy to be overwhelmed by all of new things to see when exploring a new location, which is exactly what happened to me when I first arrived in Málaga. But, one of the beautiful realities about visual research skills and observation is the ability to see "data" through our everyday lives, resulting in theoretical explanations and well, explanations of lived experiences, historical and current. We take for granted these "small" pieces of observable sights, but they often speak loudly about the history, reminders for current sociopolitical conditions.

Near our temporary stay, there is a monument in Plaza de la Merced. The monument is actually a tomb for General Torrijos and 48 of his comrades who risked their lives for liberation. He was a strong proponent of the constitution, advocating for the Constitution of 1812 to be followed and restored, pushing against the absolutism Ferdinand VII was trying to impose. Despite a brief period of liberal rule, or El Trienio Liberal, which ended when France initiated its Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis in support of absolutism.

Unfortunately, this also resulted in the execution of Torrijos and his comrades, who are noted as heros in this monument and tomb. What stands out to me in addition to this history is a quote that he said, memorialized on this plaque, "A vista de este ejemplo, ciudadanos, antes morir que consentir tiranos." Or, my rough translation, "In view of this example, citizens, it would be better to die than to consent to tyrants."

I really took this to heart, sitting with the reality that these individuals were praised for their fight for justice and liberation, and it stands as a reminder that there is not an end point, but rather an ongoing fight for resistance. These acts of resistance also serve as valuable reminders as to why we need to learn real history to help fuel moments of hope and change for the future.

This site holds centuries of history and is a powerful reminder of how borders—epistemic, cultural, and physical—have shaped this region, and do globally. Just below the Alcazaba at is feet is the Roman theater, dating back to the 1st century, offering a window into even older histories of the space.

The Alcazaba was designed to be nearly impenetrable, built to protect a city caught in the flow of shifting borders. Málaga was eventually taken from Muslim rule by the Spanish, but the fortress stands as a visual and historical reminder of the diverse cultural impact that occurred during the Al-Andalus period, and how it continues to be impacted and has throughout time.

The architecture itself blends influences from Islamic, neoclassicism (like the water tub), and Roman influence, a reflection of how cultural borders blur over time but still also remain their own cultural fixture in time. It’s also a powerful reminder of how borders can, and often do, create tension, dividing people and cultures, but can also leave space for moments of exchange, beauty, and transformation. It's easy to see simply walls, but the history and critical meanings behind them are crucial to conceptualize beyond what we think we know.

I want to revisit something I've shared on another platform before.

I’ve found that one of the small but impactful things I do in my classes is adding campus-specific resources to the top of my Canvas modules. I started doing this a while back, and now I just update it each semester as needed after just simply importing it from a previous semester.

It's pretty simple, but it makes a difference. I also include other support resources, Students may not always know where to look or feel comfortable asking folks. As a first-gen student, I remember how hard it was to navigate campus resources, figure out where to go for help, or even know what was available.

While I believe access to this kind of information has improved drastically, there’s still a stigma around asking for support, or some students hesitate to reach out.

I’d love to see institutions embed these kinds of resources automatically when they create course shells, making them a default feature rather than something individual instructors have to add.

Anyway, just sharing in case it helps anyone looking for easy ways to make resources more visible for students who might not say they need them.

But the reality is that there’s a story unfolding, as is the case with flamenco.

Flamenco isn’t just music and movement; it’s history, memory, and resistance. It took shape in 18th-century Andalusia, where nearly half of Spain’s Roma population lives, and was shaped by the Romani people, who migrated to Spain between the 9th and 14th centuries. Their traditions, struggles, and celebrations pulse through flamenco’s core. During this performance, the dancer shared her personal story, identifying herself as gitana (her word choice). She spoke of her community’s long history of persecution and how, despite deeply rooted traditions, they continue to fight for freedom, love, and dignity for all. While the art form itself was beautiful, the story and resistance seem through the performance was a powerful and moving historical storytelling.

But this is about more than a single performance. It’s about how history moves across borders, how knowledge and culture are carried, reshaped, and often silenced by colonial "logic". The Romani people have existed across nations yet have been denied belonging, yet still advocate for freedom and love. This tension mirrors the larger ways power dictates whose knowledge, histories, and existences are recognized.

And here’s the thing—flamenco isn’t just an art form; it’s a statement. A refusal to be erased. A reminder that culture is political, that existence is political. And in times like these, we can’t forget that.

Now consider what these elements mean together—how our self-contained, comfortable spaces shape how we see the world and how we must continue to engage with the sociopolitical landscapes around us and beyond.

Walking into La Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación in Málaga, I can’t help but feel the weight of history. The towering columns, the Renaissance and Baroque details, the echoes of choral hymns—all create a space that is undeniably sacred. As a Catholic, I recognize the spiritual significance of these elements.
Yet, faith and history are intertwined with human realities. This cathedral was built atop a mosque after the Reconquista, marking both religious devotion and political conquest. The grandeur of its architecture reflects not only artistic mastery but also centuries of labor, power, and erasure. Who gets remembered in these spaces? Whose histories are preserved, and whose are left in the margins?

Sacred spaces hold deep meaning—not just for believers but for all who seek to understand the past. We can honor their beauty and significance while also acknowledging the man-made complexities within them. To truly appreciate history is to hold both reverence and reflection in the same breath.

📍 It's vital we don't let our own sacred practices make us immune to critical thoughts and reflection or allow us to dehumanize each other or others.
