With endless rejection letters, it's hard to keep my head up. I remember feeling similarly a year ago, sitting in my flat as the sun slowly woke up, creeping into my window as I wondered why I can't land anything.

And then I remember feeling this immense realization that I really need to pursue my writing, something I keep circling back to over and over again. I was dedicating myself to daily writing beyond academic endeavors, though that too, resulting in a couple book chapters that really made me proud and allowed me to explore my work lyrically and poetically, ways traditional journals don't quite do.

And then I came back to the U.S. and the depression settled in. Quite frankly, I've been pretty frozen since. Nevermind, of course, the rejections that make me feel like I'm not cut out to be an academic.

I've been really diving into my writing lately, which was supported by something incredible Owen said, suggesting all the time I spend on cover letters maybe should be spent on writing the stuff that makes me happy.

And I've been trying to do that. So, I'm sharing a bit of that reflection here:

On Friday I did a photoshoot for a dear friend who just recently graduated. She's a first generation student like myself and has gone through hell and back to finish her degree.

This was my graduation gift to her, and I'm so fortunate she allowed me to do this. I'm by no means a professional photographer, but for me, photos can tell stories. Sometimes, they're simply a single moment captured, like an evening out with your loved ones, a wedding or graduation like this, or maybe it's candid, like a laugh, a joke during homeroom or science class in high school.

Sure, we can manipulate photos and social media is curated, and I'm not denying that. But, they can also be incredible, documenting histories that are silenced or left out, ways to learn or share ideas or resistance, to honor the paths our ancestors built, and sometimes, just the personal, a way to celebrate the work we've done.

I typically stick to street art or landscapes, but when Rhiana asked what I thought about graduation photos, I knew I needed to. I remember feeling those moments of emotions, joy, and grief, and I feel fortunate I have been able to capture many of those for her here.

Also, fun fact - my 12 year old daughter captured the last photo, and the set up was her idea ❤️

Hi friends,

I am in need of more survey responses. After my time in Spain, I fell in love with the idea of researching street art. I actually have a paper I have submitted and another I'm developing. For this, I am collecting survey data on San Diego street art, graffiti, and wheatpaste, which are posters that are placed in different places.

My intention is to understand the messages, politics, and stories represented and told through these various forms of art, and also about perceptions and opinions on street art. Culturally these are so vastly different across communities, cities, and countries, and so I'm hoping to identify these differences, too.

My daughter made me wear Happy Birthday glasses lol.

Started the day at the DMV because I forgot that my license expired 😭🤦🏻‍♀️

And then got my hair cut.

It certainly wasn't as glorious as spending a birthday in Spain like last year, but it was a nice reminder that laughter and time with loved ones matter more than where you're at.

On Wednesday, January 21, my cat of almost 19 years died. She was 18 years and 8 months old, my heart cat, and I had her since she was 5 weeks old when her mom cat died.
I had every plan to write a eulogy of sorts, honoring her life, discussing the role of pets in companionship, and my life with Amora.

I do plan on revisiting this another day, but then Alex Pretti was murdered, with videos showing he did nothing to justify his death, despite what some claim. Not the first to be murdered by a federal agent, a government-sanctioned execution in the public eye, but with video evidence showing us, proving to us, that he was not aiming to cause harm, and yet, we are consistently being told by certain media otherwise, telling us to trust them and not ourselves.

Things feel incredibly hopeless right now at times for many, but we have to keep going. I share my thoughts, a bit of sociology, and the ways existence is political, something some claim to forget, but none of us can afford to. After all, existence is political.

Spain is absolutely a large part of my heart, and it's hard to move past that these days, especially as the memories have now trickled in, day-by-day, reminding me where I was a year ago "on this day," thanks to Facebook.

As I lay in bed, recovering in agonizing pain, I have been reflecting on the mindset of No Pasa Nada.

I've been dealing with a lot of chronic pain lately. My shoulders hurt, my foot feels like it's in a vice, my hip makes me toss and turn at night—my entire body has just been hurting and pretty consistently.

I'm not a stranger to chronic pain, though. I've dealt with migraines since I was four. My knees have been locking up on me since I was about seven. I would go to work at age 21 with excruciating stiffness in my rhomboid muscles.

I woke up today in pain... at 1pm. Because I didn't go to sleep until about 7 am, and didn't settle into bed again until about 8 am.

I've dealt with chronic pain for three decades of my 37 years of life. And it's pretty exhausting.

So today, I woke up and then wrote about it, sharing some of that experience, and to help remind folks that life isn't all about productivity... that it's enough to just exist.

As many of you know, I was in Spain for the first half of 2025 thanks to my Fulbright. It was an incredible honor to experience it, and I am proud of that opportunity and the work I put in. Yet, the biggest takeaways, proudest moments, were the daily interactions.

As of today, I've been writing for 9 days in a row. No amount of words have felt too few or too many, be it 50 or 1,000. I've managed to work on two short stories that are almost done and I'm submitting to literary magazines. Now that grading is done, I hope to focus more on writing, hitting higher numbers, but either way, my focus is to just get words on a page every single day.

After watching an episode of Doctor Who, I revisited the idea of Bad Wolf, which was spray painted by our flat in Spain, which felt like a bit of a sign (though still not sure how I feel about them.)

On that, I've written a new essay on my Substack. I'm trying to really lean into my writing, sharing words and thoughts. It's a way for me to be vulnerable.

I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but I haven't been able to find time or motivation for some time. I also have been writing toward my Substack, really leaning into my writing, while also still trying to knock out some academic

I hit 7 days in a row as of December 26, 1,053 words toward one short story I'm planning to submit to a literary magazine soon, having written a little over 2,000 words toward another short story I'm opting to submit at a later point.

I feel so fulfilled with this, and trying to write something daily has now become a welcomed challenge. Here's to another 7 hopeful days ❤️

Always a good reminder of the beauty and power of the Fulbright in how it brings so many fields, scholars, and countries together.

Six months ago today, the kids and I moved out from our flat in Málaga, the place we'd called home for several months. Our landlord was incredible, and we exchanged kind words, where he told me I will always have a home there if we come back.

And if I'm honest, I've been struggling a lot.

I haven't picked up my actual camera since July. It sits by my bed, only touched so I can ensure dust doesn't collect.

I love my students and enjoy teaching, but I struggle to focus, to feel connected, I miss the community I thought I had before I left for Spain, and I'm missing the community I made while in Spain.

Transitioning back to San Diego life was harder than I expected. There are so many things people share before you leave for an adventure like this, but so many they don't, or can't, because it's part of the discovery.

Anyway, I wrote a letter to myself as the woman I was last year because a year ago I was gearing up for our departure. I'd really love for you to read it.

Today, as Donald Trump is about to sign into effect his "One Big Beautiful Bill ACT," 249 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, I return to Paulo Freire.

Since its signing, and of course before, this country has experienced growth and caused harm. It has long built itself through systems of oppression, through camps, occupation, imprisonment, and colonization while growing economically, building programs, and creating global connections. And we had only begun to start trying to reconcile and admit, but have not disguised as “American exceptionalism.”

So as this OBBBA is signed, and the rich will celebrate their wins, millions will lose their healthcare.

The rich will get richer in an era of mounting economic disparities.

Citizens and non-citizens alike are being kidnapped in broad daylight, now backed by even more funding through this bill.

Protections for transgender loved ones have been stripped from policy prior to this. Environmental protections and their needs have been denied. Science is under attack.

Today is supposed to mark freedom. Of course, not for everyone. It was freedom from monarch rule, a declaration of separation from tyranny. But what good is freedom when it is weaponized to justify injustice? Of course, it really is not freedom at all.

I return to Freire’s words in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This quote captures what we are witnessing today in our homes, among neighbors, and in our communities. We have a choice to stand in solidarity. Yet, many are afraid of true liberation and instead, rally behind the oppressors.

So while fireworks erupt and flags are waved, I, with many, sit with the reminder that we are watching authoritarian and oligarchic power take place right in front of us and we can't back down. I am reminded of another of Freire's quotes, where he writes, "The greatest humanistic and historical task of the oppressed: to liberate themselves."

This means we keep fighting and maintaining hope, as the oppressors will not liberate us.

I’ve always felt like I haven’t really belonged. I remember sitting on the bus during field trips, looking at all the friends and groups and wondering why I didn’t have a designated friend group.

I would drive through San Diego or Los Angeles, feeling restless, understanding exactly where to go, how to get from point A to point G, but never feeling really like it was “home,” but knowing that I at least knew the city.

I’ve gotten close to feeling like “home,” or a sense of belonging, but never really quite there.

Until I went to Spain. I can’t quite explain the magic I felt, and sure, there may have been an element of, “It’s new! And amazing! And away!” But I was terrified at first, something I vulnerably share in this blog post.

Anyway, I’d love for you to read a little about my experiences in Spain. This is just one reflection and I’m sure I’ll share more, but now that I have been back in the United States for ten days, I wanted to share some thoughts and experiences I had, and really emphasize why the Fulbright is so important.

It’s much more than an academic award or grant, but it’s an opportunity, a way of connecting individuals across the globe, and an opportunity for many to find feelings of belonging elsewhere.

It is, unfortunately, under attack as we know. Many professionals and academics resigned because they realized the integrity of the program was at risk. No, not because of their own doing, but because of the administration. Because of those who have little to no knowledge of how cultural divides can be bridged, and instead have exerted power and control over beautiful and amazing opportunities such as these.

So please, I urge you to read this, and know that my story is not the only one, there are countless other stories, similar and different, that highlight the importance of programs such as these and the beauty of working abroad.

Dublin absolutely captured my heart in multiple ways.

I had conversations with people about histories of colonization, whether it be in Ireland, the U.S. or elsewhere. We discussed the horrible conditions we are witnessing in the U.S. We talked about the ways things can be better, the importance of connection and culture, and so much more.

My children and I visited the National Leprechaun Museum, where we learned about folklore and mythology in Ireland. We also went to EPIC, the Emigration Museum, which highlights stories of joy, pain, anguish, and reason for emigration.

The landscape and scenery is gorgeous and breathtaking.

We have since arrived back in the U.S., spending time in the Midwest as we do every summer before making our way back to San Diego. I'll be reflecting on the entire journey I've just experienced soon.

As we are about to embark on our journey back to the United States since my Fulbright grant and research has ended, we have been visiting the places that have helped make Málaga feel like home.

Next door to our flat were two places we visited often, one being a restaurant, within a minute walk. We would pass by and see people sitting outside who became familiar faces. We ate here within the first week because we knew there would be food similar to what we were used to because of its American theme.

It was humorous to us because of how much it truly embodied American decor, but the culture was so different from the states. It was welcoming, familiar and laid back, yet provided excellent service and food. And when we found U.S. baseball teams on their menu, including San Diego and LA Dodgers burgers, well, it was a fit lol.

We became regulars, to the point they knew our drink and food order, and would let us know when they were out of our favorite items. It was such a great environment that we even brought family there when they were in town, too.

Part of our experience in Spain was just that: the beauty of community and connection, even if you weren't necessarily friends, stands out. When I received my grant, I expected a professional transformation of course, but the personal was just as significant, if not more. And @grupo_kaiser helped make our neighborhood feel like home.

I ordered the San Diego Padres burger, because you know, that's where we'll eventually end up again, so I felt it was fitting. :)

These experiences are not just for the professional, but the community we become, we fit into, the connections we make, and the values we bring back with us to help make our own spaces stronger and more supportive, hopefully. And special thanks to Kaiser, for providing excellent service and a welcoming environment.

When we first moved to Málaga we discovered a lovely place: Paws for a Moment Cat Café and Co-Working.

We knew Málaga was temporary since I'd received a Fulbright grant, but we really missed our furbabies in San Diego, who are being loved and well cared for while we are gone, but we miss them nonetheless.

Stumbling into Paws, we knew this would be a comfy place to help Málaga feel more like home. We didn't know what the transition to Málaga would be like, but finding places like Paws was amazing and so needed.

As the grant has come to an end and we need to return back to the United States, we visited one more time today to say bye to our kitty friends. We've visited so often I think they started recognizing us, and we certainly know them each by name.

It's bittersweet to leave, returning back to our loved ones, but we cannot thank @pawsmalaga enough for having this space where we laughed, snuggled with kitties, painted mugs in, and where we shared a cold beverage with each other. We'll forever be grateful for this amazing place and if and when we return to Málaga some day, hope to see the kitties again then.
